Origami Instructions How to Make a Paper Boat

So, you ever wanted to make a paper boat to play with your rubber ducky when you're in the bathtub I'm going to show you how. My name is Robert Segundo. We're going to make a paper boat today. Now, whenever one of the simplest things to do if you're really actually going to stick this in water would be to take Crayons and color both sides. Crayons has got wax in them and it will keep the boat from actually getting wet and falling apart. The wax will keep it afloat as well. So, what we're going to do is we're going to take a.

Square piece of paper and we're going to fold it in half like so there we go. Let's fold it into another half like so. This is more of a diagonal fold than a half fold. There we go. Now, we're going to open this up and we're going to take our points and fold it in on all four corners there we go. Same thing here, all four corners. There we go. Same thing here, all four corners. Now, we've made a smaller square. What we're going to do is we're going to open these points up and we're going to fold these in half like.

So. Then fold it back into place. So, let's do this quick because I've got a popsicle and my popsicle is melting. So, here we go. There we go now what we're going to do is we're going to take and fold our boat in half like so. Then what we're going to do is take these corners and fold them down in half again like so. Then we're going to take these corners here and fold them along that crease there, down, same thing on the other side, down like.

So. Now, we're going to take this and we're going to fold it into thirds. Once like that, my papers kind of thick so this is going to take a little bit of force and once again like that. Now, we're going to get in here and we're going to press on this. Same thing over here, into thirds like so. Let's press on this real good. I shouldn't have used such thick paper. Now, what we're going to to do is we're going to pick it up from the underside,.

We're going to open it up and press down on the center like so. What this is going to do is this is going create our boat like so. Then you can kind of work the corners here and bring it up into a nice canoe shape. If you've colored it correctly and all over with your Crayon this will float. There you go. There you go, you can work your sides up a little bit more to get that classic canoe shape, but basically that's it. There's your boat. Have fun sailing.

Why Do Ships Float

I mean, heavy things sink in water, right Like when someone up there tosses a rock into the ocean which happens, you know it sinks. So why does that heavy ship get to float Jessi The reason a big, heavy ship like that can float has to do with its shape. Whether an object sinks or floats to begin with has a lot to do with something called displacement. Displacement is when an object displaces, or pushes aside, water. So, like, when you drop an ice cube into an alreadyfull glass of water, some water spills out.

TGS That's displacement Jessi That's right the amount of water that spills out is actually equal to the amount of space the ice cube takes up! Or think about when you take a bath. TGS Hold up. Wait. What's a bath Jessi Well, up here, we like to clean ourselves up by soaking in a tub full of nice warm, soapy water. TGS That sounds gross! Do that mean that humans just walk around all day getting dirty If you spent all of your time in the water like me, you'd never get dirty in the first.

Place. Jessi Well, not everyone's the same, right I know some of the people watching here know what a bath is. TGS Mmmrph, okay. Jessi So, say you fill the bathtub up all the way to the top. And then you climb in. Now there's water on the floor. Lots of water. The amount of water equal to the amount of space that you took up! Now, one of the secrets to an object being able to float, is that it has to displace enough water so that the water it pushes aside weighs as much as it does.

Alright, so, say you're in the tub and you want to do an experiment. You can bring in a small bowl, and some rocks from your rock collection. If you put the bowl in the water, it'll float. Because the bottom of the bowl is displacing some water. And the amount of water that it's pushing aside weighs the same as the bowl. Now, drop a little rock in there. Add another, and another. The bowl is getting heavier, so it's sinking a little bit each time. But even though the bowl is heavier, it's also displacing more water so the amount.

Of water that it's pushing aside still weighs the same as the bowl. TGS So what does that mean for the cruise ship Why doesn't it sink Jessi Well, ships are designed to displace as much water as possible. They're realllly wide, and their bottoms tend stretch down really far, so they push aside a lot of water. Plus, a ship has lots of empty space inside it a lot of it is hollow which helps to keep it light, compared to the huge amount of water that it's displacing.
