Oral History Tutorial George Luzier on the craft of building beautiful wooden boats
Well, let's start over there with the first ones. My name is George B. Luzier. And I was born 61224 in Sarasota, Florida. So I'm a downtoearth Cracker. This was my second boat. My first boat I don't have pictures of right now. I was about 14 and that's built in my mother's garage over on Pomelo Street. And this is Clark's Ark and it was built way back, that was over in the old Rec Hall building. And it's still up in Bradenton and it's still going strong. It's been a very successful boat and everybody.
Loves it. That's a 16foot outboard. We built, I don't know, 5 or 6 of them. My typical day is I get up at six o'clock and get moving, try to get over at the shop about eight. There's always something I can do. Some days, you know, you're building or doing something, you're right in there cuttin', sawin', and goin' at it hammer and tong. Now right here. I don't see my favorite tool but that's a Stihl electric plane. You can see it's had a little hard usage. I've had it, I know, 50 years. It run good, never.
Gave any problem. They never made a better saw than that 14inch Delta. And that saw's, oh, I'm sure it's at least 60 years old. I've had it for 50odd years. I bought it secondhand. But it's just a good, ruggedit's a heavy little mother. And on the bigger boats, see, we'd pick that up and throw it inside the boat, don't have to walk back and forth and save a lot of time. That's a 3115 Singer, and it'll sew most anything you stick under it. But it's full of all sorts of glameration of. whatever. And I've got, you know, most.
Of these tools, I don't want 'em to hang on the wall and show and this and that, they're to be used. Like this little plane here, a lot of things you want to set at a depth or something, on a surface, and this works great. And this old timer. Well, you never got enough clamps. Nah, it's been, ah, it's been interesting to do and I've had a lot of enjoyment out of it. You know, some of the job parts are not that easy, but you know, it don't.
Start a Woodworking Business Home Bar Project
Hi, it's Jim at the Furniture Workshop. Here's our latest parttime income project, the three panel home bar. Now this is a project I introduced back in November. Now that it's complete, I'd like to share more details about the materials as well as the costs. I'll also talk about the potential revenue for this project if you're interested in building bars in your shop. And finally I'll share a tactic for promoting the bars to local prospects. But first, I'd like to talk about the three elements that I think make the home bar an.
Attractive income project. Now first off, home bars typically have a healthy sales price, they're fairly easy to build in a home workshop and there are some straightforward tactics for targeting folks that are likely to be interested in buying a bar. So, looking at the construction of this bar, there are four major components for the base. The frame is built from number two pine stock. For the skin, I'm using one half inch birth plywood. And the decorative panel frames are created with clear pine. And I've got some cap molding.
Setting off the panels. Now the bar top is built with clear pine over onehalf inch constructiongrade plywood. And I've got some laminated pine for the top rails. So, for this design, the material costs work out to just under four hundred dollars per bar here in Massachusetts. So, switching gears to marketing, here's tactic I recommend to promote this project to potential customers. Now I've found that postcard mailings are an effective way to get the word out to local prospects. And with all the ways to promote a business, postcards are still a very costeffective.
Tactic. By using mailing lists, you can target potential customers by location, demographics as well as interests. Now for example, this project, an interest in home brewing is a good list category to test out. Now postcard mailings also let you to time your promotions to generate new business at your own pace. Now I've found that's real helpful when you're running a parttime operation. So, let's walk through a sample postcard campaign using this bar as an example. Here some figures I'll start with with. Material costs for the bar are $400. Our cost for a 500piece postcard.
Campaign is $494. And I'll use a retail price of $895 for this model. And let's assume we make 3 sales from our 500piece postcard mailing. So, three sales at $895 each works out to $2,685 in gross revenue. If we subtract the $1200 material costs for the three bars, that leaves $1,485. Now we'll subtract the $494 cost for the postcard campaign and we're left with $991 net revenue. So, that works out to roughly $330 per bar in net revenue for our sample marketing campaign. Of course, this example simplifies things a bit as we're.
Leaving out some costs like shop expenses and consumables. This exercise is just meant to illustrate the possibilities of a unique project when selling your woodworking. Now I've found that niche projects like this can be more fun to build compared to say traditional work like kitchen cabinets or shelving units. So that's an overview of the home bar income project. If you're interested in building home bars in your area, plans for this model are available. You can click right here for more information. And this is actually the third project in the woodworking income series. If you'd like to check out the other income.
DIY Dock Protector
Boating is a huge part of cottage life but there's one thing about boats thats got me stumped What's the point of having a rub rail if the darn thing never touches the dock It's about as useless as having a parachute at a spelling bee Sure boat bumpers do their work, but they wear the side of the boat big time Well today we're going to bridge that gap between boat and dock To illustrate we have a boat.we have a dock and our boats even equipped with a rub rail.
So what's the issue Well, the problem is that the boat rides above the dock most often in order to bridge that gap most of us add bumpers bumpers wear on the haul.so what if we could turn the dock vertical therefore allowing the rub rail to do its job well we could do that simply by adding a couple pieces Every boat and dock is unique For my boat, my dock, I determined thirty two inches was the right height so all we need to do now is mount them the dock.
I'm going to do that with lag bolts and recess the holes because I'm also going to add this dock edge and the head of the bolt would obviously interfere with the face of the dock edge Alright I got my lags I'm just gonna start them.I'm putting two in the bottom because that's where most of the torque is and then once the vertical pieces are mounted this will go overtop and its screwed in okay let's go down to the dock Most boats taper towards the bowel about midship.
So let's put one of our vertical pieces there And.maybe back here Alright so I'm bringing down this so the bottom of my vertical piece is flush to the bottom of my dock So I'm going to hammer this one in to get it started I'll use the ratchet for the bottom ones So next we're going to add this vinyl dock edge to our vertical, to give us even greater protection bigger boats are of course going to require more vertical supports and perhaps be struck back to the dock for increased strength.
But hey, we finally got the rub rail doing what it was designed to do and for us older folks.no I'm not included in that bracket sorry There's a handy grab rail so we can get in and out of the boat now I'm gonna hang onto the boat bumpers because a lot of dock owners aren't as cool as we are! But as far as I'm concerned we solved our problem. For Cottage Life, this is Wayne Lennox reminding you that a little project goes a long way at the cottage!.
Boat Building on the Cape
For me, building a boat is a lot like raising a child. You do the best job you can with the tools you have, and if you work diligently, everything works out. We jut out in the North Atlantic Ocean about 30 miles. So, boats played a big role in everything that people have done here on Cape Cod throughout history. So it's been important to us economically and it's also a source of pride. We, all of us, whether we're directly involved, as I am in the boat business or not, are on.
This unusual, even unique place with some unusual skills and craftsman, which is something you can't say in other parts of the country. One of the great things about boat building is that we're able to draw upon proven designs and proven techniques from our own boating experiences and incorporate that into the boats that we're building today. Our boats are special, they're unique, they're handcrafted. And they have a soul. They're built by our team, our crew with extreme care and a lot of love. The end result is, of course, to satisfy the client. Fortunately, for I think anybody who.
Is in the business of naval architecture there is a tremendous amount of satisfaction for one's self if the boat looks good, goes fast and gets the owner the places he always dreamed of going. My wife always kids me. To me, the best perfume would be something that smelled like sanded old varnish. There are smells, tarred marline, sanded varnish, the smell of fresh paint when you walk into the shop after something has been painted. The cedar dust in the air, the smell of mahogany, the black stain that comes on your hand from working with honduras mahogany.
Make A Wine Cabinet From An Old TV Cabinet
You've probably seen these old tv cabinets on the curb waiting for trash pickup. We saw this one and knew we had to have it. It looked really bad, but we knew it had potential. Watch us transform this one into a wine bar. Shabby DIY We started by removing all the electrical stuff. The TV slid out surprisingly easy. Then we removed the drawers, and the front speakers panels. Some of the trim was damaged so we removed that as well. Next we notched the shelves for our modified drawers.
After everything was removed we gave the cabinet a quick wipe down to remove any dust or dirt. We gave it a quick coat of primer to make sure our paint would stick. Then we painted the cabinet with two coats of satin black. We chose satin black because it's a little easier to clean and a little more durable than flat black. Pieces of reclaimed wood were cut to size. Then we nailed them into place. We repeated this process and finished the corners last. Next we added the wood flooring to the center of the cabinet.
